The Goal Of Being A Perfect Parent
Soon-to-be moms and dads and new parents often have this goal, but even seasoned parents, those who have a few unique little personalities under their roof, still find themselves asking how to raise them right. A loving parent always has questions about nutrition, physical, social and emotional growth, and hopefully spiritual growth, but with a wide range of current viewpoints, many parents are skeptical of present-day childrearing books. Although much of the content seems appealing, it can also be harmful.
Praying for our children is always a productive, beneficial, practical, spot-on first step, and one worth examining a little closer.
Is there an effective way to pray for our children? The answer to this (and a myriad of other questions concerning our children) can be found within the pages of scripture.
In his letter to the Colossians, Paul addressed this young church, who were disposed to being attacked by destructive teachings. Although it is important to explain to children why certain ideas are wrong when they don’t align with Scripture, it is beyond important to pray for them.
Found in Colossians 1:9-12, Paul prayed for “his children” and within his prayer he described his aspirations for them. Paul’s prayer focused on the positive—on Christ alone. His prayer might serve as a good example for us:
For this reason, since the day we heard about you, we have not stopped praying for you. (Pray often and never give up).
We continually ask God to fill you with the knowledge of His will through all the wisdom and understanding that the Spirit gives. (We can count on the wisdom and understanding from the Holy Spirit to give us the knowledge, skills, and strength that enables us to do His will as we pray and study His word).
So that you may live a life worthy of the Lord and please Him in every way: bearing fruit in every good work, (He is pleased when we seek His will and our obedience to Him brings about the best results).
growing in the knowledge of God, (Continue learning about Him and building a relationship with Him).
being strengthened with all power according to his glorious might so that you may have great endurance and patience, (Prepared for the daily struggles and the long-haul. His power is limitless and His timing is perfect).
and giving joyful thanks to the Father, who has qualified you to share in the inheritance of His holy people in the kingdom of light. (We are His).
What better assurances can we hope for our children than drawing on the strength of our Creator?
