“Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his power. Put on the whole armor of God, so that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. For our struggle is not against enemies of blood and flesh, but against the rulers, …the authorities, … the cosmic powers of this present darkness, … the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places. Therefore, take up the whole armor of God, so that you may be able to withstand on that evil day, and having done everything, to stand firm.” Ephesians 6:10-14
I have been praying the verses in Ephesians 6:10-20 for us, as staff and for the summer missionaries. Please pray for us to put on the armor of God.
- Belt of Truth: for our convictions to encompass us as the belt encompasses the vital organs.
- Breastplate of Righteousness: for us to do what is right in God’s eyes.
- Shoes shod with the Gospel of Peace: The shoes allow us to step freely and without fear while we turn our attention to the battle at hand.
- Shield of Faith: Which guards, deflects, defends, and incapacitates the enemy.
- Helmet of Salvation: the hope of salvation can protect our thoughts from our enemy’s attacks and temptations to disobey God.
Meet the Missionaries
Here’s what they had to say about why they are returning to work with CEF…
Elizabeth Smallwood
(5th year) Houghton College graduate
“I really wanted to return as a summer missionary this summer because I love working with the children of Schuylkill County and getting to know them at camp. It’s always so amazing to see God at work each week in the children and in everyone involved with day camp. I am so blessed to be returning for another year and I am so excited to see what God has in store for the summer!”
Regina Miller
(3rd year) She completed her sophomore year at Tri-Valley High School
“I’m coming back as a summer missionary so I can be blessed to see more kids come to know or grow in Christ.”
Jerusha McCarthy
(2nd year) She completed her junior year as a home school student.
“I’m really looking forward to being a summer missionary again! Part of the reason is that it is a truly fun experience, but more importantly, I know it’s not meaningless. I like that everything is centered around the gospel, so every single child has the opportunity to know what Jesus has done for them. It doesn’t feel out of place to randomly bring up the gospel of Jesus with the kids because that’s the point of CEF. Also, Christians are supposed to be witnesses, and being a summer missionary is the perfect opportunity for me.”
MacKenzie Werez
(2nd year) Completed her junior year at Schuylkill Haven High School
“I’m returning as a summer missionary because it means a lot to me to be able to share Christ with the kids because that’s something that I never got when I was their age. I had to go through a lot of trials in life before I learned about the love of Christ and it makes me overjoyed that I get to share the love of Christ in hopes that they’ll be able to carry Christ with them through the trials they face instead of trying to go through it on their own. It’s important for me to reach the kids because they deserve to hear the gospel as much as anyone else and many people take that for granted and overlook the children, so it’s our job to make sure they hear the message too! That is what being a CEF summer missionary means to me!”
Katie Burian
She is returning to serve as summer staff for her 17th year. She is a teacher at Upper Dauphin School District, mom of four and wife of Ray Burian.
“I just keep returning to help the ministry spread God’s Word.”
