Meet the Missionaries!
Our two new missionaries this year are Regina Miller and James Dietrich. Regina has served as a volunteer at all of the Good News Day Camps held last year and at the Schuylkill County Fair. She is very excited to be working with CEF® this summer and said that she could hardly wait to send out her support letters. James or (Jimmy) has volunteered at Good News Day Camp in Valley View in the past. When asked what led you to become a Summer Missionary, Jimmy said, “I was evangelized at the camp in my area when I was younger and I want other children to have the same experience as I’ve had.”
Katie Burian is returning for her 15th year. She is the wife of Ray Burian; mom to Alexander, Joyce, Bennett and Cooper. Katie spends the school year teaching at Upper Dauphin. She has been an integral part of the summer ministry.
Laura Gottfried is returning for her fourth year as a summer missionary. Laura says, “I love working with children! It brings me such joy to see understanding and excitement come to their faces as I explain the Gospel to them or tell them a Bible story! This is the next generation that I have the opportunity to impact through Christ and if just one child’s life is changed then I have done my job.”
Mary Gottfried is returning for her third year. Mary says, “I became a summer missionary because I wanted to be like my two older sisters, and wanted to reach children with the Gospel. What brings me joy is working with children and watching them grow in understanding of the Gospel.”
Mercedes Miller is returning for her fifth year. ‘Cede’ as she likes to be called, says “I get the greatest joy of being a Summer Missionary from the relationships I build year after year. It is a blessing to see all the kids that I have talked to before return to either club, camp, or the fair. They share stories of what they remember from past years, and then I get to tell my team members about it as well. Our team is normally very close knit and I am grateful for the relationships I make through being a Summer Missionary.”
Elizabeth (EB) Smallwood is returning for her third year as a CEF summer missionary. She says, “I really felt called to become a summer missionary after volunteering at one of the camps for two years. I needed a better job than the one I had at the time. I thought it would be a great summer job in which I could be doing God’s work. Everything seemed to fall into place and I was really excited to be able to become a member of the team. For me the greatest joy is getting to connect with people. I get to know the kids I’m working with pretty well and it’s so much fun to hang out with them and teach them. I also love that I get the chance to connect with other adults whether they host clubs, work at camps or attend the churches I visit. It’s so cool to get to meet new people and get to know them and talk with them. Even if I only get to have a five minute conversation with them, it’s always such a joy.”
